“When you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore...”
– Jamie Raskin (Senator, Maryland) I’ve seen this multiple times in the past few days, but DOES ANYONE THINK IT’S PROBLEMATIC THAT PEOPLE ARE SWORN INTO THEIR SECULAR JOB WITH A RELIGIOUS ARTIFACT? MAYBE IF PEOPLE SWORE TO UPHOLD THE CONSTITUTION ON THE CONSTITUTION THEY’D BE LESS...

Have they had Pharoah play
Geoffrey Canada before? Because that was a pretty random character for him to do…especially since he just dances…

So I'm finally watching last week's SNL with
Maya Rudolph and it’s a travesty that they did not have another black person to play Yeezy in that Jay-Z/Beyonce/Blue Ivy skit. Especially since she mentioned he was at the birth. Ugh, whatever. But I have always loved Armisen’s Prince. I can’t help it. I wish he would just play Prince in all skits, regardless of how appropriate that is/how much sense that makes.

Netflix wants to abandon this whole Netflix thing... →
Continuing a trajectory that will make a fascinating cautionary example for some future business class, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has made explicit his intentions to transform his company from a once-powerful titan of a unique industry into an ordinary cable channel, saying it was Netflix’s “natural direction” to be bundled in an ordinary cable package someday and provide an ordinary sampling of...

My (somewhat?very?) belated Oscar thoughts
The opening was staid, but I love the Biebs. So I loved that the Biebs was there. How perfect are Jennifer Lopez’s breasts? They were distracting and exquisite. I loved Brett McKenzie’s face when Billy Crystal sat right in front of him. SHIELA E. (and Pharell) ON THE MOTHERFUCKING DRUMS! I liked Viola Davis’ choice to go natural. I thought it was awkward that everyone...

Today in "Netflix is losing a lot of its streaming... →
As demanded by Netflix’s convoluted karmic membership plan, the company’s promisingrecent deal with The Weinstein Company requires that it first send back all of its Starz content, stuffing nearly 800 titles in a metaphorical big red envelope as the companies’ partnership dissolves on February 29. The end of Netflix’s contract with Starz means an end to a huge chunk of its streaming library,...

Lucy Liu will play Watson to CBS’s Sherlock... →
Lucy Liu has been cast as Joan Watson in CBS’s new Sherlock Holmes series, “Elementary.” This news has caused some people to freak out. I think it’s kind of a neat choice. I also enjoy Lucy Liu. So there’s that.

Is anyone else confused
about Benedict Cumberbatch being cast as the voice of The Necromancer in The Hobbit movies. Is my memory faulty? The Necromancer didn’t actually appear in The Hobbit, right? He was just referenced? Peter, what are you doing?

I don't really have recurring dreams
but I do have dreams in recurring locations. They’re always more or less fictional places and they’re always the setting of nightmares. I never have recurring good dreams/good dream locations. For a long time, I had relatively frequent dreams that were set in a run down version of my middle school - the geography was largely the same, but the lights were always mostly off and it was...
